I've been wanting to start collecting vintage sheets to use in quilts. Today I went to Goodwill and got these two sheets - the blue one for $2.99 and the pink one for $1.99.
I don't know how to tell if they are actually vintage, but the patterns fit with what I'm looking for. I'm going to research this online. Here is what the tags look like. The blue one says Penneys on the back in an old looking font. I love how soft they are! I plan to keep looking for more.
I'd say you're doing pretty well if those are your two sheets in your stash so far! Typically, vintage sheets in the US are 50/50 cotton/poly or 60/40 cotton/poly. For some reason, foreign vintage sheets tend to be all cotton from my experience swapping with those out of the country. I good way to tell age is to look at the elastic on the fitted sheet (though you'll get less usable fabric out of those, keep that in mind). It almost never goes all the way around the sheet and is often lost its elasticity. I also look at the sides... most newer sheets are hemmed on all four sides, whereas older sheets had a different finish (looks like really tight weave). I will say I have found vintage sheets with all four edges hemmed, but not that often! Vintage sheet hunting is fun - keep updating with your new finds!
